Monterey Shopping
Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel-by-the-Sea is an exclusive shopping enclave bursting with charming boutiques, fine art galleries, and luxury retailers. The open-air courtyard of Carmel Plaza, at the top of Ocean Avenue, emulates a European shopping village. With its recent renovation, the facility offers shoppers lush landscaping and trickling fountains as they explore more than 40 stores, including Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Anthropologie, Bottega Veneta and Wilkes Bashford. The Concierge Center at Carmel Plaza also offers assistance for travelers with any of their needs. The facility even caters to canine companions: don't miss the dogfriendly "Fountain of Woof."
Carmel Valley
Carmel Valley features shopping, too--just off Highway 1, two charming shopping villages are well worth exploring. First, discover the Barnyard Shopping Village. Situated on more than six acres, the open-air shopping village delivers a unique, upscale boutique environment nestled into cascading levels of breathtaking gardens lined with red brick pathways. Located only one mile south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the Barnyard Shopping Village boasts 50 locally owned and operated shops, eight international restaurants and cafés, as well as a variety
of professional services. Retail shops include couture men's and women's clothing, brilliant jewelry, chic shoes,
exquisite art, children's toys and upscale salons and spas. Discover the shops, indulge in the cuisine, enjoy the
annual events and unwind in the lavish gardens. Nearby, stop in at The Crossroads, known by locals as "a must-see for serious shoppers". This shopping center features gift shops, sporting goods stores, florists and professional services. Along a flower filled Boulevard, friendly shopkeepers present the finest in fashion, jewelry,
gifts, specialty food and services to fill visitors' every need. The Crossroads also offers a fine selection of award-winning dining on the Monterey Peninsula, with plenty of pet-friendly outdoor seating! Further inland (about 11 miles) on Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley Village is home to a dozen specialty stores, some of which sell fine wines, hand-thrown pottery, sculpture, and designer apparel, to name a few.
Marina
With the late 2007 debut of a new 368,000-square foot community retail center, Marina has recently established
itself as one of the most convenient shopping stops on the Monterey Peninsula. The Dunes on Monterey Bay
community center is part of the 400- acre master-planned community of the same name currently in development on the former Fort Ord Army base. The project is one of the largest mixed-use developments in the region, and the retail tenant roster includes some of the leading names in retail: Best Buy, Kohl's, Old Navy, REI, and Target. Additional shopping, as well as restaurants and entertainment, are on the horizon as Marina continues its development of the hundreds of acres of former government land. A handful of mixed-use development
projects, are under way and expected to make significant progress in 2008.
Monterey
Old Monterey's main thoroughfare, Alvarado Street, is notable for its Farmers' Market, one of the largest in California. The market takes place every Tuesday, rain or shine. The town's independent bookstores, home furnishing shops, and bright boutiques complement a trafficfree mall beside the Monterey Conference Center. In this mall, art galleries sit next to wine shops and an intimate café.
